Color Pop: Orange

As the days get shorter, and the temperatures get cooler...warm things up on the inside with a touch of orange. Combining the energy of red and the happiness of yellow, orange is known to promote feelings of energy, enthusiasm, creativity.

A trend that I have noticed floating through the design world lately is the use of wood paneling.

It has been added to ceilings, walls, kitchen islands. It has been used both in its natural form, and painted...but one thing is for sure, it adds an element of character and texture to a space.

Fall in Fayetteville...a Few Fall Tips from My Mom

I hope you all had a fabulous weekend. Alfred and I spent most of the weekend relaxing, and then traveled into Lubbock to do a little shopping. It was so nice to finally spend a "weekend" with him. He works a crazy schedule and usually ends up working on the weekend, so it was nice to spend it just hanging out together.

Today, I am really excited to share some photos of my parent's house decorated for fall.

My mom is the QUEEN "nesting." She always seems to know how to add that magic touch to a space, just enough to make it special without going overboard. Her decorations for fall this year were no exception.

My parent's home was built in 1865. It was where my father was raised and my parent's had their wedding reception. The home was sold soon after my parent's were married. It came available for sale in 2006 for the first time since my grandparent's sold it.

In February 2007, my father bought it back from the person who bought it from my grandparents. The house was in pretty rough shape when my dad purchased it, but he spent hours upon hours restoring it and today it is gorgeous. He did all of the work himself, a true labor of love.

I will have to try to get some before and after photos to share with you. For now, I hope you enjoy the fall decor.

A Few Tips from Mom:

1. Weave a simple grapevine wreath with Japanese lanterns, curly willow and pheasant feathers.

2. Decorate your lamp post with foddershocks.
Wrap them with little white Christmas lights to show them off at night.

3. Pile on the Pumpkins

4. Cozy up the corner with a small outdoor table decorated with natural elements.

...and of course, no photo (at my parent's house) is complete without Duke (their crazy, lovable golden).

If you're new to The Mustard Ceiling, welcome and welcome back to all of my regulars.

My name is Elizabeth and I started The Mustard Ceiling in January as a way to share my love of interior design and DIY. My husband and I bought our house in April, 2008 and have been renovating it ever since. He thinks we're almost finished...(wink,wink) but I still have ALOT of plans.

I was happy and honored when Ange asked me to be apart of Roomspiration and share my laundry room with you!

Let's get this party started...shall we?

Ok, here it is! I am so exciting to share this reveal with you today. This project took FOREVER, but a nice laundry room really does make the chore of doing laundry more enjoyable.

After Before

Can you believe it is the same room?

This is how we did it:

1. Cleared everything out

2. Painted the walls
Color: Valspar Meadowlands Green

3. Stenciled the walls using Olive Leaf Stencil Pattern Noelle
Color: Valspar Sunwash

(this was the tricky and time consuming part)

*Tips for stenciling*

1. Lightly spray the back of your stencil with a spray adhesive to prevent the paint from bleeding around the edges of the stencil and attach to the wall using painter's tape.

2. Use a stiff stenciling brush and apply paint using a dry brush technique.
(especially for textured walls, like ours)

3. Dab your brush in the paint, then blot the excess paint off on a napkin.
(this will keep your edges sharp)

4. Apply a thin layer of paint to stencil, dabbing the stencil with your brush.

5. Allow the first coat of paint to dry, and repeat as necessary before moving your stencil.

6. Move the stencil vertically, or horizontally, overlapping the pattern as you move around the room. Periodically check your stencil with a level to keep your pattern and stencil straight.

7. Repeat.

and FINALLY THE BIG REVEAL!

Did you notice I did not stencil the back of the shelves?

I thought the pattern needed offset by a little solid, so I left the back of the shelves
and the wall where the door is located solid green.

I felt the pattern would be too overwhelming if every inch of the room was covered.

I think it is now my favorite room in the house...which is not bad for a laundry room!

I hope everyone had a terrific weekend. I did. I didn't get as much relaxing as I had planned, but I am excited to announce that I will be offering custom Wordpress designs soon, in addition to Blogger!

I am currently working on my new design site to get it up and running, I will fill you in with more details soon.
