The Inside Scoop: Jane Gallant

Today, I would like to welcome Jane from Modern Jane. Jane is a teacher from Prince Edwards Island, and an incredibly talented design enthusiast. If you haven't seen her home, be sure to check it out after the series.

I'm thrilled that Elizabeth asked me to participate in this series. It really made me think about how blogging has changed the way I see design. I can't wait to see the responses of the others participating in the series.

I just marked the one year anniversary of my blog on the 18th of April. Each day, I am in awe that people are still reading it and finding it interesting enough to stick with me.

Mostly that there are so many other people who share my passion and that they offer me much more inspiration that I could ever find in a magazine. My mind is constantly spinning with inspiration!

I've learned that your blog is part of a community. It will not grow on it's own. Commenting, featuring other blogs and projects are essential to being part of it. You have to give in order to get in return!

And lastly, it's time consuming. Maintaining a blog takes time and if it isn't something you truly love doing, it could be particularly stressful. Lucky for me, for the most part, I find it a joy or else I would have abandoned it by now!

I am definitely most inspired by the blogs that I read. I am constantly saving images and filing away projects that I hope to find the time to use some day.

This is a tough one for me. I actually really struggle with putting a name to it. I think it's important to style your home in a way that reflects its bones. My own home is a 70 year old craftsman style and I try to ensure that my choices are harmonious.

 That's not to say that I am not totally smitten with the perfect industrial loft, a seaside post modern home, or a perfectly cozy bohemian apartment. Someone lately told me that they thought my own home could be described as "modern classic". I suppose it is a good description so I'll go with that!

Think outside the box! I live in an area without box stores. I can't hop over to Ikea or even Home Sense and pick up that perfect piece. Instead I have to scour thrift stores and antique shops for treasures that I can transform into something I love.

 Go with your gut. I'm drawn to certain colors and styles. Sometimes I go in a different direction in an attempt to be fun or different. This generally results in doing things twice. Generally, your first instinct is the right one for you!

I can't believe I originally painting this room olive green. What was I thinking.. so not me!

Black. Although I am a lover of white. I don't think any room is complete without a touch of black. Somehow it has the ability to anchor the room.

No room is complete without fresh flowers.

I try to always have fresh flowers in my home. Whatever is in season at the grocery store or a few clippings for the garden (or a neighbors garden when they aren't looking:)) Nothing makes it feel like home like the pop of color a bouquet or little posie does.
