Design Taste....Bam or Slam!

Last night, while searching for inspiration on e-bay, I came across the very interesting porter chair, also known as the canopy chair.

The porter chair originated in mid-evil England. It was designed for a gatekeeper servant to sit in, at the front door, to screen visitors. Often it was cold, and drafty, this chair was designed to keep drafts off of the servant.

Today, the porter chair is all glam, it has been used in many designs by Kelly Wearstler and is now featured in Restoration Hardware.

At first glance, I was not a fan. However, after researching it. I may be slowly changing my mind-the jury is still out.

All in all, whether you are a fan or not, this chair is a statement. What do you think BAM ( it's a hit) or SLAM (your not a fan)...

    I appreciate it because of it's history and I think I would like to sit in it- especially on a breezy porch but I have to admit that I think it is ugly! Yup, I said it. I think only once have I seen it (I think it was in leather, might have even been one of Kelly's designs) that I've liked it in an interior space.

    Hmmmm, I am not sold. Although a few of the versions are much better than others. I imagine you would have to have a fairly large room so that this chair doesn't become the entire focus of your decor. Using them as dining chairs seems...weird. lol

    It reminds me of something from Alice in Wonderland! Definitely a conversation piece but I think I would tire of it over the years!

    It's a cool design, which is why I can't have it in my home...not nearly cool enough to pull it off a la Kelly Wearstler!

    I want to be open minded to different design aesthetics but I'm going to have to slam this one. Totally not a fan! I'll let you know if I change my mind in ten years.

    hmmmmm...these chairs make quite a statement. The one photo makes me think seventh floor at Bergdorf's for lunch....but aside from a setting like that, I don't think I could embrace it for my house.

    Think they look good in some settings but don't think I could ever have one in my home. I'm on the fence between Bam & Slam.

    the very LAST picture makes me somewhat like it, but the idea of having your head covered is weird. It reminds me a bit of the fair ride, the Tilt-a-Whirl. Hmm... on the fence.

    These chairs have fascinated me since I was a young girl! --my design career started at my first doll house!

    I'll have to admit- these chairs haven't even come close to being a favorite. Something about them is just a little too overdone for me. But I have to admit that I like the one in the last picture. I think because the simplicity of the fabric and pillow allow the uniqueness and detail of the chair to be the star of the show.

    I am honestly kind of torn - I think it would have to be the right space, in the right room, with the right decor. And then maybe it would work. Some of the pics you posted look gorgeous :)

    Funny thing about these chairs...I think I must love them because I always save pictures with them in it and they have such an interesting shape...but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't actually ever want one in my own house...I'm so weird! (c:
