Living the Dream....I wish I could say this is us, it will be.
Our Airstream in SC...she needs a lot of work!Today my hubby and I are working on our 1968 Airstream Overlander.
He has always wanted an trailer to travel in, but I wasn't sold. I was picturing us, 30 years old, traveling across the country in a traveling bus. THIS is not my idea of enjoying the great outdoors. I quickly nixed the idea until...I fell in love with an Airstream.
One night while at art school, my husband was deployed, I started missing home. I started to dream of packing up like a turtle and traveling around belongings in tow.
Surfing the internet that night I stumbled across a little piece of a Americana....the Airstream travel trailer.
From that point on I was HOOKED! Glued to the computer I clicked through page after page of fascinating restoration/renovation pictures and stories of Airstreams. They were all so different, each Airstream brought with it a new story, it was incredible.
After that I could not wait for my hubby to call. I plotted and schemed, trying figure out a way to get him on board with another renovation project, this one a travel trailer. Fortunately, he was sold right away. With the ever lovely, " I told ya so tone in his voice." he claimed an Airstream was his vision all along... "boondocking" (boondocking is camping in secluded areas without hookups) across America.
So here we are, we bought her off ebay in SC. We picked her up and so far have traveled from SC to MD, WV and brought her home to NM, all of this within a 2.5 week period. There were minor troubles along the way. Our water lines have a leak, the door flew open in Indiana and we had to duck tape it the rest of the way to NM. However, with all that said we are excited to bring her back to her glory days.
Our winter/spring project is to get her back in shape, the first trip is planned for July. We plan on loading up the dogs and taking her to Albuqurque for some Airforce training. After that we want to escape wonderful Clovis, NM for weekend trips around NM and CO for starters.
Wish us luck, today is the first big start of the renovation!

Wow! I knew you wanted to renovate, but I figured a little new paint and some carpet! I should have known your "vision" would have to be a much grander ideal!
ReplyDeleteWhat FUN! We recently moved to Otero County, New Mexico, from Rochester, NY. We also recently purchased a semi-retired do 1974 Airstream, Sovereign and plan to use it as an AirBnB for vacationers and military who come to town for training! I hope your project has gone well. Would love to see photos of her finished.
